How to Earn Your Employees' Loyalty

Updated: Jan 18

With the growing average rate of employees seeking for other job opportunities while in service to their current employers and with the widespread trend in employee disengagement, employee loyalty may seem like just a concept or an abstract to you.

However every employer needs a right hand, a lieutenant, someone you can count on. We mentioned in our post https://www.mirandaubong.com/post/why-your-employees-resign the undesired costs and effects on employee resignation. So working towards increasing your employee loyalty is a better bet.

Also, employee loyalty doesn’t necessarily have to come from your best performing staff. It really could be anyone, literally anyone!

Here are a few tips to earn your employees’ loyalty:

Have a Vision: First you must have a resonating vision. People want to give their loyalty to a worthy cause and a visionary leader. Make your vision clear, cascade it into shorter term goals, involve your employees and delegate important tasks to the right people.

Allow the Right Level of Autonomy: It first starts with delegation. And after you are able to delegate, cede control to your employees, the right people. Let them make decisions and learn to be accountable for their actions.

Focus on Increasing Their Experience not Only Their Engagement: If you haven’t heard, employee experience is the new focus and is displacing the concept of employee engagement. Show your employees that you care about giving them a rewarding work experience rather than just seeking their commitment. It should be a win-win.

Eliminate or Reduce Uncertainties: From ditching the verbal threats, to rightly communicating and implementing change, providing your employees a degree of predictability shapes their future plans with you. Where there is high uncertainty and unpredictability, where threats abound with destructive changes every now and then - your employees will always be on the lookout for themselves alone.

Be Compassionate: If during your rough times you can’t look beyond your losses or pain and remain sensitive to your employees and if during your good times you don’t show a will to help your employees - then you might as well be dead to them. Employees always go the extra mile for a compassionate leader.

Duly Recognize and Reward: It’s almost just about enough said on this topic. If you want more from your employees, then appreciate them even more! For the little achievements and the bigger ones - appreciate! For the near misses - appreciate! Always show your appreciation and do so genuinely.

Improve your Employer Branding: Build your reputation as an employer. This may take a long while and will only work on a great company culture. Employees love to be heard to be associated with a good brand as an employer. You become their pride and they will not want to lose it.
