How to get Fast Recognition at your Workplace

Updated: Aug 23, 2019

This write up will give you an insightful perspective on gaining immediate positive recognition in your place of work.

It is not a matter of time before your Line Manger or the Management recognizes you, it is a matter of getting the right things done.

Fact is, you do not only have to get a job done to gain recognition, you also can make yourself visible through other means – and I’ll show you right away.

See these:

Become an Intrapreneur: There is no one more revered in an organization than the person who creates innovative ideas for the Company and sees through its successful implementation. Innovation may not be on the average employee’s job description, but it most likely is on the person specification or skill requirements.

Point is, you do not have to be in the strategy department (if your organization has such), nor do you have to be on the management team, or even hold an innovative-specific role to become an Intrapreneur. All you've got to do is do a power-point presentation to your management or boss, convincing them on what they should do, why they should do it and how they should do it.

If and when your proposal is sanctioned, you will sure be made to be on the table for drivers for the idea, and would’ve automatically won yourself a spot on a future business project. And Boom! There comes your recognition.

Engage in Smart Conversations: Especially with your bosses, be intentional in striking a smart conversation or asking intelligent questions where appropriate. This conversation may not necessarily and always be about the business, it may well be about an interest of yours or your boss or about trending matters globally.

This portrays you as a smart thinking person, with an incredible communication skill which is usually a prerequisite for a career advancement in an organization.

It is important that you do not come across as forcible or overly all over anyone in the name of engaging in a conversation.

Dress Smart! Smell Good!: As vague as any one may find this, looking the part always makes the statement that you may not be opportune to say or show.

Especially in this era of perception, it is necessary that you look like where you are headed and what you are trying to become. This gives you an acceleration you may not even deserve- because people first think of you as what you appear.

And hey, it should not have to cost a limb to look good.

Personal Learning and Development: Almost inevitable. This is a mix of study and experience, always push beyond what you have acquired skill-wise and book-wise. You can never do beyond what you know to do.

Apply to your Line Manager for a job rotation or a bigger task, acquire a certification in your related professional field – inform your HR on your recent achievements in the learning field. Present a certificate where applicable.

Here is the thing; bosses like a room made up of intellectual power houses rather retards.

Be Genuinely Selfless: In both your commitment on the job and concern for your colleagues. Be the one to help out with overflow tasks, to give in the extra hour, to volunteer for that difficult project, to make sacrificial commitment to the services of your organization.

Show a genuine concern for your colleagues. Support financially when you can, support professionally where you are capable, give your moral support if need be. They will always speak well of you.

Most bosses will always choose commitment to competence, someone who is willing over the one who can (but isn’t willing). This makes people perceive you as a natural leader and also can give you a compassionate advantage even where your performance is low.

Begin now in showing consistency with these tips, and you will well be on your way to gaining that long sought recognition.

You’re welcome and see you next time.
